Be a Design Genius

If you’re not artistically inclined, then the world of interior design can be an intimidating one. However, once you know a few of the tricks of the trade, creating amazing and stylish interior designs is easy. Here’s a few of the techniques that top designers use to create appealing and inviting rooms.

Tip 1: Pay Attention to Lighting

All rooms – large or small, benefit greatly from light. Small rooms look bigger when they’re well lit, and big rooms need plenty of light to make sure that they don’t look dingy and depressing. Good interior designers make use of natural light, mood lighting, dimmer switches, and functional lighting to make sure that every room looks its absolute best.

Tip 2: Pick a Consistent Theme

Choose a theme that will run through the house – whether that’s a rustic, modern, or natural is up to you. Individual rooms can still have their own style, but tie things together with a little consistency. If you’re opting for a look themed around natural materials, then you might want to use oak internal doors throughout the house. Behind the oak door that leads to your son’s room there could be a room decorated entirely with Disney’s Cars merchandise, but at least the overall theme of the house is consistent!

Tip 3: The Colour Wheel is Your Friend

If you don’t have a good eye for colours, don’t despair. You can rely on the colour wheel to tell you whether the colours that you are planning on using will match. Colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel are complimentary colours, and generally go well together.

Tip 4: Consider Each Room as a Whole

So, you’ve decided that you’ll be using oak internal doors, natural fabrics, and furniture made of sustainable materials. That’s great! But, what colour will you paint the walls? What material will you use for the floor? Before you commit any funds to your design, plan out the entire room.

Tip 5: Good Design is Functional

Don’t just think about what each room will look like. Think about what it will be used for, and who it will be used by, too. There’s no point in opting for floor to ceiling storage in a young child’s bedroom if you know that the child is likely to try to climb on things to get stuff from the top shelf. Nor is it a good idea to design a kitchen that has very little counter space if you know that your significant other loves to prepare lavish meals that use every single bowl, device, and pan in the kitchen.

There’s more to good design than deciding if an oak door or a pine door would look best. Good design looks and feels good – in fact, good design gets out of the way and lets you focus on just “doing”.

Before you spend money on putting a new interior design together, sleep on it for a day or two and look at it with a clear head, or, show it to friends and see if they can spot something you’ve missed. You’ll be surprised what you might have forgotten in your first or second drafts.
