A Day Trip to the Ancient Mayan Ruins at Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza Cancun ToursAn epic city is how Chichen Itza has been described. This very striking Maya site on all of the Yucatan Peninsula is merely three hours away from the Playa del Carmen. The great pyramid of this city has been legendary for its ability to provide tricky hiking track as well as a spectacular sight of the jungle. It has hundreds of ruin buildings too though thirty of those have been reinstated completely. There are still hundreds of partly re-established buildings and untouched ruins waiting to be uncovered from vines and bushes. Read on this article to know more about the root of Chichen Itza and the various interesting sites that one can visit in its stay in the Peninsula.

History of Chichen Itza as a Great City:

It was in 850 AD when this great city was established and for two to three centuries it was prospering. Its impact on the Mexican history is big that various folklores and myths about this city are still circulated and some are even considered facts. To give more verity about the details of Chichen Itza, here is what we were able to gather. This site is considered as the largest city and most international among the city in its time. Several Mayan temples, with Puuc, Toltec and Mixtecan architecture sway, were built during the peak of its regime. The art as well as ceramics seen in this city were proof of extensive Mexicanization and wide-ranging cultural and trade barter. The rulers of this city then are known as the Itzaes which are Maya-speaking tribe that hailed from the central Mexico just near the border of Mayan realm.

Connection & Myths of Chichen Itza to the Toltec Dynasty:

One of the common myths on the history of Chichen Itza is about its connection with the Toltecs. It has been a common knowledge to most of the people, mainly because of hearsay, that the Chichen Itza was once under the control of Toltec. The presence of Toltecs influence on the culture of Chichen Itza has been used as the basis on this claim. However, apart from the Toltec, various cultures from different part of Mexico are evident in this ruined city. In Tula, the capital of Toltec, influence of Chichen Itza is also manifested. So that goes to say that we cannot really tell which culture influenced which. The more accepted and plausible explanation to the influences of different cultures is the continuous trade and interaction among the people in Mesoamerica. The prominence of Chichen Itza must have attracted a lot of other people into its site that eventually resulted to various cultures being present in the area. The God of Totltec, Quetzalcoatl, was believed to have been introduced in the Mayan culture through Chichen Itza. The feather serpent Gods replica on the El Castillos bottom staircase can be good evidence to this. But the fact that this same icon was being devoted by the Mayan culture as well, only under the different name, Kulkulan, can only indicate the broad trade among the Mesoamerican people that time.

Rule of the Itza Civilization:

The rule of Itzaes was ended in the late twelfth century. The rivals of the tribe succeeded in shooing them away and the tribe was forced to take residence in Tayasal, Guatamela currently known as Flores which is merely adjacent to one of the Mayan ruin, the Tikal. While dwelling in the Lake Peten Itza, the Itzaes continued to practice their custom and tradition which includes the practice of human sacrifice. Many Spanish soldiers and priests were given this fate as they enter their far-off land. During the Spanish colonial activity, other Mayans were strained to run off and went in this place for cover. In 1697, Itzaes can no longer hold back so they surrender to Spanish invasion and in about 1100 AD the citys importance has disappeared although it remained inhabited up until the early period of Spanish reign. In the middle of the sixteenth century, Chichen Itza served as headquarter of the Spanish conquistador Francisco de Montejo in its quest to overpower the Yucatan Peninsula. During the late nineteenth century the place finally laid to rest as the excavations in the site started. Today this ruins original look can be seen in the photos located right at the entrance of the museum.

Summary & Conclusion:
